Aurora Real Estate

About the City

Autumn afternoon

Aurora’s humble beginnings were rather rocky. A Chicago real estate tycoon by the name of Donald Fletcher founded the town located east of Denver in 1891. He even graciously gave the new town his name (Fletcher). However, residents would soon come to curse that name just two years later when he deserted the town leaving residents with bond payments for non-existent water. Not to anyone’s surprise, the town decided to rename itself Aurora (Latin for “dawn”) in 1907.

Aurora remained a small, quite community until well after World War II. Then, the push for suburban development transformed the town into one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Today, it is the third largest city in Colorado located just twenty minutes east of Denver. It is also the closest city to the Denver International Airport.

Census data (2000) noted that there were 276,393 people, 105,625 households, and 68,867 families residing in Aurora. The median resident age was 31.7 years.
